Plastic Hypersea (The Spill)

Collaboration Composition Film Music

Plastic Hypersea (The Spill) is part a non-linear “sci-fi documentary” by artist-researcher Sissel Marie Tonn, for which I was commissioned to compose the soundtrack.

The documentary takes the shape of a number of separate short films that are presented as a non-linear interactive narrative. Plastic Hypersea departs from the notion of shared contamination, and explores through science fiction how the presence of microplastics in our environments challenge us to reconsider our sense of embodiment. The Spill spins an imaginary tale building upon a real-life event: the spilling of 349 containers holding millions of kilograms of plastic waste into the North Sea by the containership MSC Zoe in 2019. The films explore the idea of how we might conceive of this event differently if it had a direct immunological, psychological and morphological impact upon our bodies?
