Information Kinetics is series of free improvisation performances exploring the motion and rhythm of digital information. Hand-held electromagnetic sensors are used to transduce the murmuring electromagnetic activity of a laptop computer into sound. The sounds are sampled and re-sampled by the performer, using software running on the computer. The resulting tight loop between player, phenomena and computation allows for extremely nuanced and dynamic expressions. An array of light bulbs explodes and interprets the musical gestures and dimensions of the laptop’s electromagnetic byproducts as a flickering cloud of lights, each representing a channel of information.
